Emergency Medical Services
The San Bruno Fire department provides Advanced Life Support emergency medical services to the city, as well as surrounding cities throughout San Mateo County. What does this mean?
At the heart of our treatments for patients is Basic Life Support. This training is enhanced by the Advanced Life Support components that allow our care to be at the cutting edge and the best possible for our citizens.
Equipment
At the "heart" of our equipment is our heart monitor/defibrillator. The defibrillator is made by Medtronic Corp. The model is the Lifepack 12.
The Monitor is capable of monitoring a person's EKG (a visual graph of a patient's electrical heart activity), Blood Oxygen Saturation, Blood Pressure, and also has the capability of Capnography (a plot of a person's exhaled CO2).
The Lifepack 12 not only has monitoring capabilities but also doubles as a defibrillator. The defibrillator mode delivers electricity to the patient in an attempt to stop the heart to give it a chance to self resume organized and periodic electrical activity. The defibrillator is also able to deliver a timed shock to convert life threatening heart rhythms.
Intravenous lines and medicines are the other ALS components that go with the fundamental Basic life support care (BLS). The medicines include cardiac meds, limited overdose antidotes, as well as seizure, pain, and breathing medicines.
