Police Officers:
Minimum requirements for police officer positions are as follows:
- 21 years of age
- U.S. citizen
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- California driver's license
- No felony convictions
- P.O.S.T. certification
Fire Fighters:
To prepare for a career in firefighting, consider the following steps:
1. Enroll in and complete a Fire Technology Program. Fire Technology programs are available at most community colleges. Paramedics are in high demand -- consider enrolling in a Paramedic Certification course to get your EMT-P certification.
2. Attend study groups and test preparation courses to get more information about what entry-level firefighter exams cover. Continually practice and improve. Practice your oral interview skills and start preparing for the physical ability tests.
3. Start taking employment exams given by cities and fire agencies. Exposure to the test-taking process may help you overcome test anxiety and give you ideas about what to study.
4. Review your test results for areas that require improvement. Libraries often have sample questions and study guides or materials.
5. Persevere. Many qualified firefighters take a multitude of tests and dozens of interviews before being hired.
When you are ready, consider testing with FireHire, Incorporated. A passing score on this test will put you on a list for a number of highly desirable agencies in Northern California, including the City of San Bruno. Only candidates who have successfully completed the FireHire process will be contacted for further testing and/or an interview when a vacancy occurs in the San Bruno Fire Department. There is a nominal processing fee to take the firefighter written test. (Fee waivers are available for demonstrated need.)
