Space Needs and Costs
The present facility is 15,600 square feet, which includes the downstairs meeting room. The previously done studies indicate a need for approximately 42,000 square feet for Library use. Additional square footage should be calculated to accommodate other uses, such as a small theater, meeting rooms, a history room, etc. As a frame of reference, the Foster City Library is 34,000 square feet (24,000 for Library, 10,000 for 2nd floor Community Center), with a construction cost of $6 million and an additional $830,000 for architectural fees, furnishings, equipment and moving expenses. Another example is the San Carlos Library, at 36,400 square feet (21,500 for Library, 14,900 for 2nd floor Community Room), with a construction cost of $9.25 million, excluding the architectural fees, furnishings and equipment.
