Library Borrowing Policies

Loan Periods
Please note that the following loan periods apply only to the San Bruno Public Library and may vary from the loan periods of other San Mateo County libraries.

New & Older Fiction
3 weeks
Non-Fiction 3 weeks
Children's & Young Adult 3 weeks
Holiday Audio-Visual Materials 1 week
Holiday Books 3 weeks
Periodicals 1 week
Cassettes, Audio Books, CDs, Playaways 3 weeks
DVDs with less than 3 discs 1 week

Most San Bruno Library items may be renewed up to three times, provided no holds have been placed. Materials may be renewed online or by phone at (650) 638-0399, or in person at at any San Mateo County library.

Item Limits
Please note that the following item limits apply only to the San Bruno Public Library and may vary from the item limit policies of other San Mateo County libraries. The total number of items on any one card at any given time is 50 items for all the libraries.

Videos, DVDs, CDs, Cassettes and Audio Books - 15 of each format

Returning Materials
San Bruno Public Library materials may be returned to any public or community college library in San Mateo County. Conversely, materials from other public and/or community college libraries in the County may be returned to San Bruno.

When returning materials to the San Bruno Public Library during open hours, please leave them at the Circulation desk. When the Library is closed, items may be returned in the outside book drop located next to the Library entrance on Angus Ave West.

Fines and Fees
It is the responsibility of the borrower whose card was used to check out library materials to return the materials by the due dates. Fines will be charged for materials not returned on time. Fines are assessed per item as follows:

Adult/Young Adult Materials 25 cents/day
Children's Materials 15 cents/day


Fines may be paid in person at the library or online by accessing your library account.

Other Charges
For lost items or items damaged beyond repair, the charge is the price of the item plus a $5 processing fee.

$2 for the replacement of a lost or damaged library card. A lost card should be reported to your local San Mateo County library as soon as possible.

75 cents to reserve an item, payable when the hold is placed.

$10 for an Interlibrary Loan from outside the Peninsula Library System.
