Street Trees
"Street trees" are those designated trees planted either in or adjacent to the public right-of-way, which are controlled as part of public right-of-way maintenance.  Street trees are pruned on an "as needed" basis determined by both the needs and resources of the City.  While virtually all street trees are legally the property of the homeowner, the City controls them for the public good.

Street Tree Removal
The City Council has established a policy indicating that the only compelling reason for removal of a street tree, without further consideration of alternatives, is interference with the sanitary sewer system by roots from the tree in question.  Such a claim must be supported by sewer cleaning bills.

Do I have to pay to have a street tree installed?
Yes, as of July 1, 2003, residents are charged for each 15-gallon tree.

Where do you plant street trees?
The Parks Division will plant trees in the planting strip or in the front lawn area within the City's right-of-way.

What type of tree will you plant?
Trees may only be selected from the Master Street Tree List.

Will any tree be good for my area?

Who takes care of the tree?
Residents commit to provide water for the tree, usually once per week.  Pruning, staking or any maintenance will be performed by the City.

How often will the City prune my tree?
The City attempts to prune City trees every four years.  To see when your neighborhood is scheduled for pruning, click here.

Can I prune my tree?
No, the Street Tree ordinance prohibits individuals from pruning street trees without a permit.  The Parks Division will perform the maintenance of your tree, or you can apply for a permit to hire a licensed tree care professional at your own expense.
