The Wastewater Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for the wastewater collection system throughout the City including all sewer mains, manholes, lower laterals, and 7 lift stations.

Wastewater treatment is handled under a Joint Powers Agreement with the City of South San Francisco.  Approximately 3.4 million gallons of effluent per day are pumped from San Bruno through the Shaw Road Pump Station to be treated at the South San Francisco/San Bruno Water Quality Control Plant.  The treatment plant, which is located on Belle Air Road in the City of South San Francisco, just north of the San Francisco International Airport, is operated and maintained by the City of South San Francisco.  South San Francisco also administers the state-mandated Water Quality Control and Industrial Waste Discharge Program.  Treated wastewater is discharged 2 miles out into San Francisco Bay via a join outfall pipe shared by the cities of San Bruno, South San Francisco, Millbrae, Burlingame, Colma, and the San Francisco Airport.
