The City of San Bruno is aware of the streetlight outage affecting residents in the Crestmoor Neighborhood. The outage is connected to a regulated output (RO) electrical circuit, which operates similar to older holiday lights…if one light fails, all other lights after the failed light no longer work.
Over the last several months, City staff have worked diligently on identifying the issue/repair, along with contractor support to address the failures. The current streetlight outage is complex and difficult to repair having a series of failures following each potential solution attempt.

Study Session to Receive an Update and Provide Feedback on the Regulated Output Streetlight Replacement Project
The purpose of the project is to determine the most efficient system to replace the remaining RO streetlights, and to move away from the existing system that has had multiple failures. Since 2017 there have been several outages. Each of these outages have had a variety of reasons for failure and 12 outages, in particular, have taken significant staff resources to repair.
Options for permanent solution include:
- Parallel circuit streetlights
- Solar powered lights
- Solar powered lights with ability to connect back to system (AC/DC)
The council directed staff to continue investigating the usage of new solar streetlights in addition to repairing the existing streetlights.
